Kenny's Build Notes

The Client's intended use was primarily as a track car. He wanted to advance from novice to intermediate level in his open track outings and decided that continuing to use his AMG Mercedes sedan as a track car was not a particularly good idea. He also noted that his goal by season's end was to compete in NASA (The sanctioning body not the space agency) Time Trials.

Based on his intended use, skill level and initial budget I decided to start with my Club Sport package as the base package and add selected options and adjustments specific to fulfill his needs and meet class requirements for Time Trials. After working with him, I made the assumption that his driving skills would progress very rapidly so I actually engineered his car for a more experienced driver as I knew he would meet his goals quickly and did not make sense to re-engineer the car six or nine months later. Besides having a better car to learn with would help make him a better driver and progress more quickly.

Virtually all my emphasis was on the Power Foundation because if he wanted to be fast, maintaining high cornering speeds was the key. Because this was primarily a track car, I was able to be fairly aggressive on geometry, springs, shocks and set-up. I was saving big horsepower for later. If he really wanted to learn how to drive fast, he needed to focus on driving skills not horsing around with a big motor. Big power should only add to a person's skill set, not make up for it.

Aside from a pretty aggressive suspension set-up, some other upgrades specific to this client's application were: racing seats and race harness belts for support and control, a custom Super Street Cage with cross and diagonal bars, a weight reduction program, custom light-weight Kinesis 3-piece racing wheels and race tires and front brake ducts. As with all of my track cars, during the alignment process I “scaled” the car with driver's weight on board to balance it out. In this case we duplicated this process for each track he went to with a specific alignment and starting set-up for that specific track, just as if he was pro-racing. (Seeing as every track is different, to be really fast you need to adjust the car and sometimes driving style for each track).

The Track-Pak that comes with each Kenny Brown Club Sport includes a tire pyrometer, air pressure gauge and notebook with the build information and plenty of track prep check-off and tire temp sheets to collect and save data from each track. I also provided quite a bit of driver coaching and car set-up tips. (Click to see testing clip from Putnam Park.)

As the season was drawing to an end, his notebook had grown significantly with lots of data from all the different tracks and his driving skills had rapidly progressed from novice to experienced, all in one season – a significant accomplishment for one season.
